I would not clip a yearling, he will shed out when he is ready.
The matts will not hurt him as he should not have a girth on yet.

 

Definitely no need to clip. That's jus typical yearling, mine took a long time to shed out as well. It won't hurt them. Plus clipping once their summer coat has started to come through will ruin the summer coat

 

My colt got suuuuper fluffy this winter which was good during the winter... But now it's warming up and he's not shedding fast enough. He is, just not much. And it's been pretty hot lately. He gets sweaty, then the hair around his girth area gets matted because his legs rub. I was wondering if I should clip him, and if so what clip? Would his summer coat still be all shiney? And is it possible to use human/dog clipers? I did once before, but only a small area (a cross on his shoulder)

If you are going to show him...yes...if not...no.

Go get yourself a shedding block.They are the bomb when it comes to shedding and shining up a coat.
